Understanding Flood Stage
Action Stage: Water levels are high enough that emergency managers and officials need to take preparatory action. No flooding expected yet.
Flood Stage: The level at which the overflow of natural banks begins to cause damage. Property, roads, or infrastructure may be affected.
Moderate Flood Stage: Significant inundation of structures and roads near the river. Evacuations may be necessary.
Major Flood Stage: Extensive inundation. Severe threat to lives and property. Large-scale evacuations may be required.
Flood stage thresholds are set by NOAA/NWS for each gauging station. Data from USGS NWIS.
